Ondo Govt Wants NWPL To Sanction Abia Angels
Following an attack on officials and players of Sunshine Queens of Akure by suspected fans of Abia Angels of Umuahia, the Ondo State Government on Monday called on the Nigeria Women Premier League to look into the incident and punish the offenders.
Sunshine Queens, who played against Abia Angels in the NWPL in Umuahia on Saturday, was allegedly beaten by officials and fans of the host team after the game ended 1-1.
Referee Mariam Usman and other match officials were also alleged to have been attacked with planks, irons and stones.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “When Sunshine equalized at the start of the second half of the match, an official of Abia Angels started throwing stones and bottles of water at the visitors, who sat at the VIP lounge while the officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps could not do anything.
“After the referee ended the game, the official named Ugochi Philip took laws into her hands by attacking Sunshine officials with planks while other irate fans ambushed the referee and assaulted her.”
Sunshine’s cameraman was said to have been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, for treatment.
Ondo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, said the management of the NWPL must act by sanctioning the attackers.
He said, “The team will arrive today (Monday) and they will officially give us the details of what happened, that is when we will take our decision. We have been briefed but we are meeting on Monday to take our decision.”
Also, a member of the board of the Ondo State Football Agency, Sunday Aladenika, said the team had written letters to all the stakeholders, informing them of the attack.
“We are demanding sanctions on Abia Angels, we want the management to award us three points and three goals of the match as a result of the attack on our team,” he said.
